Song-Inspired Soft Serve

If anyone was curious how many people would come out during office hours in single-digit temps to try a new Momofuku Milk Bar ice cream flavor inspired by an also-new Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks song with the band on hand, now you know. Maybe 40? It’s hard to quantify crowds in such a small space.

Cinnamon and Lesbians tasted less like the spice and more like roses, candle wax and incense. My guess wasn’t too far off–the soft serve was flavored with rose water and smoke, as it turned out. I might not say that it’s my favorite combo (though it grows on you) but it’s kind of smart and not a total stretch to imagine that if you like those odd floral-smoky Thai desserts, this would possibly blow your mind.

Not related to food, but while self-promoting it’s worth mentioning that I was also quoted this week in The New York Times about Christmas shipping fiascos and in Reuters about Reddit experimenting with ecommerce.

Revving Up

So true. I fear that the only thing keeping me getting off the couch on a sunny Saturday afternoon is a refrigerator lacking in Revs,

that seems like something I would make if too lazy to go buy groceries or late-night drunk when the only thing open is San Loco.
(After a 4am dinner of cheese and crackers, this morning marked a new low–or is that high?–in laziness: a bagel breakfast sandwich ordered through
Seamless.) The angle being pushed is not just convenience, but protein, a recent American obsession on par with gluten avoidance. (Don’t just take it from me–57% of Americans are trying to buy packaged foods with more protein, according to a 2013 International Food Information Council Foundation survey.)

I only became aware of this snack that seems better suited for a gas station store shelf while at a suburban Target with a substantial grocery section (that still feels weirdly off-brand for me). Oh, so they’re selling a tortilla stuffed with lunch meat and a slice of cheese for $1.99? Ok.

Wegmans ready to eat

It didn’t make a full impact until an hour later when faced with the full line of eight Revs, displayed between every iteration of Lunchables at Wegmans. This is really a thing. Perhaps Hormel wanted to bank on the success of the McWrap but found the lettuce, cucumbers and sauce too complicated? Millennial bait? And I thought Hormel reached peak genius with Compleats.

I only regret not springing for one. I’ve yet to see Revs in the wild in Brooklyn, at least not at C Town.

Update: Revs are indeed at C Town. At my local there is a small row of four right before the register with the prepared sushi and salads that I’ve never seen anyone buy. Only two for $3 too. I still didn’t buy one.

Hormel, You Compleat Me

While on my monthly suburban excursion, I thought Quick Chek’s new (to me) Breakfast Cheesesteak might be the find of the journey. Turns out Sonic, just down Route 1 a bit, has a Zesty Cheesesteak Breakfast Burrito. Two’s a trend.

But that was before I found party cake-flavored
Peeps at Walmart. How does one make something taste like party cake? Not sure,
but it’s that same synthetic vanilla, butter and maybe eggy quality that
defines cake batter ice creams at places like Coldstone Creamery. The Peeps are
covered in rainbow speckles to denote a party and their marshmallow guts are
not bright white but pale yellow. Is yellow cake a party cake?


Compleats

The Hormel Compleats aisle may be the saddest
section at Wegmans. This was reinforced by the row of Healthy Choice’s Lunch
Express
taunting at eye level. I would seriously cry if my midday meal was a
small plastic tub with a small portion of pasta or white rice and a quarter cup
of goop waiting to be mixed in and microwaved (the cover as strainer is kind of
cool, I suppose?). If you wanted to stay under 300 calories couldn't you just eat a bowl of soup or something?  If anything, these packaged meals would probably benefit from
a little horse meat to liven things up a bit. I am going to order some medicore sushi off Seamless now.

Better Than Chocolate and Cuckoo Clocks?

Swissburger While McDonald's Germany names cupcakes after New York City neighborhoods, in Switzerland, the burger chain is celebrating the diversity within their own borders. Their "Swiss Weeks" promotion features three burgers, each based on a region of the country. The most interesting aspect is that the ads are in the language appropriate to each.

The McRomandie, using Gruyere and Paillasse bread is advertised in French, the McBärn with bacon, a hash brown patty and Emmentaler is in German, while the basil, mozzarella and tomato topped McTicino is in Italian.

In case you were wondering, the Swiss McDonald's site is in German. You can watch the ads there.

The Pinkberry of Pasta

It would be one thing for NYC to get two new pasta chains, but two French pasta chains? That's just weird.

Hello Pasta is planned for a midtown, 640 Lexington Avenue, opening in June with nine more locations to follow. Third Avenue at 44th Street and Maiden Lane at Water Street are listed on their website. No clues about the menu.

Nooï, an already existing French chain, will also be opening on Lexington, 340 Lexington Avenue to be precise. "Indian and Mexican sauces" will be among their 15 offerings. I do see a Bollywood sauce on their French menu, which appears to combine curry powder, chicken, yogurt and lime.

I'm not really much of a pasta eater. Flam's, the French flammkuchen chain from the Nooï folks, sounds much more interesting. Alsatian pizza is definitely a wide open market in NYC.

MOSDO!

Mosdo Today marks the birth of a mind-blowing Japanese hybrid: MOSDO! A combination MOS Burger/Mister Donut. We only have Taco Bell/Pizza Hut, a pathetic duo not even close to competing with the Japanese capacity for novelty (though it is the perfect subject for a ridiculous catchy song).

From what I can visually deduce, sets are being offered: three burgers that can be paired with three doughnuts and a drink. They also have something called Hot & Cool, a doughnut cut in half and topped with ice cream and a fruity sauce, which I did not see at any of the Bangkok locations last month. (It’s hard to believe that CentralWorld, home to MOS Burger and Mister Donut, and countless hotels are currently closed due to the political unrest in Thailand. This time it’s red shirts. Bangkok was essentially shut down during my originally planned visit late 2008 by yellow shirts. I did find an email from one of the hotels I had booked kind of charming, “Your money has been refunded due to the political.” I have referred to this situation as “The Political” ever since. And yes, I realize there are more serious subjects than burgers and doughnuts in the world but this is a food blog.)

You know that this is a Japanese venture because they don’t mingle the two brands too closely. It’s still pure. We would take the next logical step and put a MOS Burger inside a Mister Donut. Duh. It only took a week before the Double Down got Krispy Kreme’d. [Japan Today]

Horsey Sauce and More

New arby's Brooklyn’s first Arby’s is getting so close that I can almost taste the beef and cheddar. Sure, a “soft opening” is odd for a chain but I’ll still try and find a way to get there January 21 even though Thursdays are my busiest day of the week.

Based on the tiny rendering (pictured) on the Brooklyn Eagle’s site, this is going to be one classy Arby’s.

“Spanish” Food Coming to Red Hook

Spanish food taking over the former Viva space in Red Hook? Ah, “Spanish” food and the printed ad devotes more space to wraps, ribs, salads and soups and sandwiches and burgers. I’ll have to see about this Diego’s. I’d take either arroz con pollo or paella since both interpretations of Spanish are lacking in 11231.

Mucho Gusto couldn't make it along Columbia Street and Reds Tapas never gets mentioned ever.

Waffling

Harlem's first Applebee's opened today but Uptown Flavor was lucky enough to attend an opening party this weekend. What caught my attention was mention of the restaurant serving items from local businesses such as Make My Cake just as Downtown Brooklyn Applebee's provides slices of Cake Man Raven red velvet cakes, and that "They will also feature a few Harlem specific dishes that are exclusive to the Harlem restaurant."

I'm curious what these hyper-regional dishes will be. All I can imagine is chicken and waffles, which has become so pervasive that the version served at Buttermilk Channel down the street from my apartment was on the cover of last week's Time Out New York. How do you interpret "Harlem specific?"
