The Scoop

  • In fourth grade someone got the bright idea of cutting lunch to an outrageous 15 minutes (as if going to a year-round school without a cafeteria wasn't enough--we ate at our desks and were served by mobile carts in the hall). To get the slow eaters (me) up to speed, our teachers implemented a charming little policy called "Shovel Time."

The first nine minutes would pass normally. Then as the tenth approached, Miss Stauffer (a feathered-haired gal who drove a Camaro and loved Little River Band) would yell, "Do you know what time it is?!" The class would manically shriek back, "SHOVEL TIME!!!" Talking was absolutely forbidden the final five minutes—it was a deathly silent scarf fest.

I don't know if I've ever been the same since. But as a nod to this classy ritual, I've adopted the humble scooping implement as my rating system's icon. Shovel on!

battered fried seafood makes me hurl too! Why is that? fish tacos taste so good... It's the same thing with the fish fillet at McDonalds too, fine going down, not so fine 30 minutes later. However I did eat the fish fillet from BK a couple of weeks ago and was totally fine, making me wonder if it really was fish in that fillet. It wasn't nearly as good as McDonalds anyway.

Krista

ckc: I guess it could be bad fish but I always figured it was some strange repellent molecular (ok, maybe not molecular) thing. I have the same problem with root beer floats: it's the cream plus carbonation that wreaks havoc.

If you're truly curious, Iselin is one of the 10 "towns" that make up the Township of Woodbridge (slogan: 10 Towns, One Community). The other nine towns are Avenel, Keasbey, Sewaren, Port Reading, Fords, Menlo Park Terrace, Colonia, Hopelawn, and of course Woodbridge Proper.
And yes, I listed those from memory.

signed,
the guy who lives about ten minutes from Jose Tejas

efd: You freaked me out for a second because I mistook your "the guy" for "a guy" and I wasn't sure what the odds were that another guy who lived near Jose Tejas would even see my blog. I'm not sure why that NJ township business is so baffling to me, but thanks for clearing up the matter!

the regular queso appetizer on the jose tejas menu is some of the best queso i have ever had outside of the texas state line. i was duly impressed.

Krista

njtx71: I love the queso, too.

Friends too me there for my birthday (64th) and I could not believe my eyes when we we entered. There was (only) a 45 minute wait (which turned out to be on the money) - so we waited at the bar, which was fully packed. I found the place noisy and the "music" obnoxious - but, hey, what do I know? I must have been the oldest person in the place! When we were seated we got three appetizers (cheese quesadilla; chili, and pastelitos) - Everything was excellent. We ordered fajitas - which were out of this world! (I had to abstain from alcohol on account of medication I'm on.) I'd return for another meal in a shot! Oh, as for the noise, I merely turned my hearing aids lower!

Krista

Phil Miller: The place is always insanely crowded and loud. I have to be in the right mood, but I also like eating late. If you go after 9pm (or between lunch and dinner) it's not so bad.
