Summer in Berlin

American ethnic food in Berlin. Everyone is linking to it. Me too. Campbell’s soup, maple syrup, Betty Crocker cake mixes…it’s all so right on. They should’ve had Smucker’s Magic Shell instead of Hershey’s Shell, though.

    Hi over there,

I’m a Dutch girl living in Berlin and I can tell that in Germany all ‘upper class grocery stores’ (usually settled in the basements of an fancy-schmancy mini-mall called ‘Karstadt’) has these little ethnic food sections – and the American section is one of my favourites there. :)) At larger stores you can even get all kinds of candy bars, chocolates, salty and sweet sins, including American beer and soda aaaand ice cream! Ben and Jerry’s for example has become extremely popular here in Germany now. And even more, there is a new trend of ‘American Deli’s’ in the bigger cities, the most famous one is run by Cynthia Barcomi in Berlin. 🙂

Woooooh, TACOS? 🙂 I know I can find them here in some Mexican restaurants. But what we’re really missing here are “food trucks”. Uhh.. but we’re still observing “Dunkin Donuts” invading entire Germany – up to now they’re only in some bigger cities present and mostly in Berlin. (Sure we can’t live without them anymore.)

I would plead for a “China Town district” in Berlin btw – since I use to travel Asia a lot more than America. hehe

Thanks for your blog – you’re my “front page” in my browser (don’t know what it’s called in English). And you make me crave so many times 😉

  3. Asti: It’s funny to me that Dunkin’ Donuts has practically taken over the world because they have completely gone out of business where I grew up (Portland, Oregon). They’re more successful in other countries than in parts of the US.
