It's not too often that I get up early enough to go out to breakfast, but I can still dream about biscuits and gravy. And though I hate the term "grubbin'" (I had this genius, million dollar idea for a chain of restaurants a la Macheezmo Mouse [if you're not from the Northwest, just bear with me] where the main ingredient in the food would be grubs. We would cater towards a health conscious, rapidly aging, yuppie [and not excluding thrill-seeking 20-somethings with expendable incomes and an interest in all things tribal] clientele who would believe our nutritional claims based on research conducted in African and New Zealand villages. The eatery would be called, "Totally Grubbin'" and would surely be a success [at least in Portland]) is an appropriate description.
Real grub should be eaten in a diner or roadhouse, but my favorite biscuits and gravy comes from a place that's a little more high falutin'. Montage in Portland, OR is more known for things like cajun mac 'n' cheese and alligator caesar salad, but they also cook up a mean plate of biscuits and gravy. The biscuits almost taste like they've been deep fried and the gravy is nice, sickeningly rich and full of sausage (I normally don't like pork sausage, but b & g breaks all the rules). It's near impossible to finish a serving so it's wise to take some home to warm up the next morning. Take an aspirin, ignore the congealed grease, and wolf down the leftovers. It's not a bad hangover cure (if you don't immediately vomit, you'll be good the rest of the day).
Since I originally wrote this, I have found a New York place that cooks up some good biscuits and gravy, Old Devil Moon. This version is admirable because you get all of the above plus eggs on top for that added cholesterol high. I brought my sister there just a few weeks ago when she was in town (not for the b & g, but because they also have those vegan tofu scrambles the kids love so much). Oddly enough, we were all hungover so I turned to the biscuits and gravy as a remedy. My sister's cure was to order a beer with her breakfast. Now that's thinking.
